If you went straight to Diamond city from the opening of the game, you're likely having a hard time because you're a low level for that area. The main story urges you to go to Diamond City right off, but the game expects you to get distracted on the way and do a little leveling up before you get there. Survival is the way to play the game, and it works as intended. It disables Achievements though so for a first run and to collect those play on any diffculty other than Survival. Beating the game on Survival is an achievement on its own. Just dtch the Minutemen as soon as you can. Go for another faction. About the survival mode: i like the difficulty of the combat but I hate the part about eating and sleeping regularly. About the very hard mode: I like to kill strong enemies, I think this made the game slower because you can die every 3 minutes but it has the better combat I think, also is good to find more legendary equipment.

If enemies are still to spongy or if you die too easily, bring it back down and try upping again 5-10 levels from there. Depends on your play style and perks, etc.
